Glossary Terms

Craps is a dice game with its own unique terminology and probability-based strategies. Understanding these terms is essential for effective play and responsible decision-making at the table.

Come Out Roll

The first roll in a craps round that establishes the point or results in a win or loss. The come out roll determines whether the shooter wins immediately (rolling 7 or 11), loses immediately (rolling 2, 3, or 12), or establishes a point number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) that must be rolled again before rolling a 7 to win.

Point

The number established on the come out roll when rolling 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. Once a point is established, the shooter must roll that number again before rolling a 7 to win the pass line bet. If a 7 is rolled first, the pass line loses. The point is the cornerstone of craps strategy and odds calculation.

Pass Line Bet

The most fundamental bet in craps where you bet that the shooter will win. On the come out roll, pass line bets win immediately on 7 or 11 and lose on 2, 3, or 12. If a point is established, the pass line wins when that point is rolled again before a 7. The odds on this bet are nearly even with a house edge of approximately 1.4%.

Don't Pass Bet

The opposite of the pass line bet where you wager against the shooter. Don't pass bets win on come out rolls of 2 or 3, lose on 7 or 11, and push (tie) on 12. After a point is established, don't pass wins if a 7 is rolled before the point number repeats. This bet offers slightly better odds than pass line with approximately 1.36% house edge.

Craps Numbers

Rolling a 2, 3, or 12 on the come out roll, which typically results in an immediate loss for pass line bettors. The term "craps" derives from the game's name and represents unfavorable outcomes on the initial throw. Understanding the probability of craps numbers (2 occurs once in 36 combinations, 3 occurs twice, 12 occurs once) is crucial for bankroll management.

Odds Bets

Additional bets placed after a point is established that have no house edge, making them the best-value wagers in craps. These bets pay true odds based on probability: 2-1 for points of 4 and 10, 3-2 for points of 5 and 9, and 6-5 for points of 6 and 8. Taking or laying odds significantly improves overall game value.

Seven Out

Rolling a 7 after a point has been established, which ends the shooter's turn and results in losses for pass line bettors. The probability of rolling a 7 is 6 in 36 combinations, making it the most common outcome. Understanding the statistical likelihood of a seven out is essential for risk assessment and bet management during play.

Natural

Rolling an 11 on the come out roll, which is an immediate win for pass line bettors. A natural is also called "yo-leven" at craps tables to distinguish it from 7 when announced verbally. The probability of rolling 11 is 2 in 36 combinations, making it a relatively rare but valuable outcome for pass line bets.

Snake Eyes

Rolling a 2 (one pip on each die), which results in craps on the come out roll and is an immediate loss for pass line bettors. This is the lowest possible dice combination with a probability of 1 in 36. Snake eyes is a crucial term for understanding the distribution of outcomes and managing expectations in craps.

{{ICON_COINS}} Box Cars

Rolling a 12 (six pips on each die), which is craps on the come out roll and results in an immediate loss for pass line bettors. Box cars is also called "boxcars" and has a probability of 1 in 36, identical to snake eyes. This term helps dealers and players quickly communicate outcomes during fast-paced table action.

Table Etiquette

Professional conduct at the craps table includes never touching dice with two hands, throwing dice with appropriate force to hit the back wall, respecting other players' betting areas, and following the stickman's announcements. Proper etiquette ensures smooth game flow and creates a respectful gaming environment for all participants at the table.

Hot Hand

When a shooter rolls many consecutive numbers before sevening out, creating extended gameplay and multiple opportunities for winning bets. While this is an observational term rather than a mathematical phenomenon, understanding streak patterns helps inform betting strategies and bankroll management during extended table sessions.
